Ryde improves battery safety

Ryde improves battery safety

Ryde has developed and certified UN-approved steel packaging for the safe transport of lithium-ion batteries from electric scooters. We have been responsible for testing and type approval, and the collaboration is now being continued with follow-up of the production in China.

Tonje and Anita from our team test Ryde scooters in Porsgrunn. The collaboration with Ryde Technology AS includes testing, type approval and follow-up of the packaging solution for lithium ion batteries.

Electric scooters have become a natural part of the cityscape in large parts of the country. At the same time, extensive logistics related to the charging, maintenance and transport of large quantities of lithium ion batteries lie behind the daily operations.

In collaboration with Thomas Mundt at Ryde Technology AS a specially adapted and reusable steel packaging has been developed for the safe transport of the batteries used in Ryde's scooters.

The packaging is designed for up to 36 lithium ion batteries, UN 3480, with a total battery weight of up to 406 kg and maximum gross mass of 477 kg.

Tested and type approved by us

We have carried out testing and type approval of the packaging in accordance with the regulations for the transport of dangerous goods.

The packaging is classified as UN 50A, and the test program has, among other things, included drop testing and testing the strength when lifting from the bottom.

The internal solution ensures that the batteries are kept separate and securely in place during transport. For lithium-ion batteries, this is particularly important to reduce the risk of mechanical damage, movement and short circuits.

Cooperation continues

In collaboration with Thomas Mundt at Ryde Technology AS, the project is now moving on to the next phase. Together with Ryde, we will travel to China to see and control the production, as part of the follow-up of the approved packaging solution.

The project is a good example of how we can follow a packaging solution all the way from idea and technical assessment to testing, type approval and follow-up of production.

Increasing need for battery packaging

The growth in electric mobility means that increasingly large quantities of lithium batteries must be handled and transported between warehouses, charging points, service workshops and operational areas.

There are requirements for packaging that both satisfies the regulations and works effectively in practical use.

We assist businesses with assessment of packaging concepts, regulatory requirements, testing and UN type approvalof solutions for the transport of lithium batteries and other dangerous goods.
