NET AS becomes a co-owner of RS 2 “Langesund”

NET AS has become a co-owner of RS 2 “Langesund”, Norway’s first rescue vessel. With the ownership formally in place, we recently enjoyed our first voyage aboard this historic vessel, whose story dates back to 1893.

Maritime heritage brought to life

RS 2 “Langesund” was launched on 31 January 1893 at Porsgrunds Baadbyggeri in Knardalstrand. Based in Langesund, Norway’s first rescue vessel made an outstanding contribution during 20 years of active service.

During that time, she rescued 102 people, 39 boats and three ships, and towed no fewer than 3,536 vessels to safety. These figures remain among the highest in the history of the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue.

After many years in other service and as a fishing boat, the vessel came close to being lost. Extensive restoration began in 1989. For her centenary in 1993, RS 2 “Langesund” was rechristened and restored to her original appearance. She has been carefully maintained ever since and is now a remarkable example of Norway’s preserved maritime heritage.

Our first voyage as co-owner

Our first voyage gave us a taste of what this ownership means. Good company, conversation and the pleasure of sailing made it an experience we look forward to repeating – and a wonderful start to this year’s summer celebration.

For us at NET, this is more than a historic vessel. It is a living part of our coastal heritage that continues to bring people together.

“Langesund” and Leif Karlsen are at the heart of the experience.

A personal connection

For me, co-ownership also has a personal significance. Living and working close to the coast, I see how much the sea, our history and our sense of community still mean to local people.

Safety and quality are at the heart of NET’s work every day. Helping preserve RS 2 “Langesund” therefore feels both natural and meaningful, allowing her story of courage, voluntary effort and rescue to live on for future generations.

NET AS becomes a co-owner of RS 2 “Langesund”“Preserving our coastal heritage means preserving our identity. RS 2 ‘Langesund’ reminds us of what people can achieve when they support one another.”
