NET PackTrial 2027: Working together for comparable packaging test results

18 laboratory units from 13 countries have already expressed interest in receiving an invitation and further information about NET’s international interlaboratory comparison for dangerous goods packaging. The initiative stems from a need we have experienced ourselves as an accredited laboratory.
How comparable are the results when different laboratories test the same packaging? This is what we aim to explore through NET PackTrial 2027.
NET is now preparing an international interlaboratory comparison, with planned testing of cardboard boxes and plastic jerricans. A common test programme will enable laboratories to compare results, share experience and gain a better understanding of the factors that affect testing.
Meeting a need we have experienced ourselves
Laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 must work systematically to ensure the validity of their results. This also includes comparison with other laboratories where such activities are available and appropriate. Interlaboratory comparisons, often called round-robin tests, are a key way of doing this.
As an accredited laboratory, NET has itself lacked an easily accessible programme well suited to our needs in dangerous goods packaging testing. This is an important reason why we are now initiating NET PackTrial 2027.
The aim is to provide participants with a useful basis for their own quality assurance and professional development. The comparison will help them understand variation, identify opportunities for improvement and strengthen confidence in test results.
International interest and shared learning
NET carried out an international interlaboratory comparison for dangerous goods packaging in 2008. With PackTrial 2027, we are building on that work and creating new opportunities to exchange experience across borders.
So far, 18 external laboratory units from 13 countries have expressed interest in an invitation and further information. NET will also take part in the planned test programme.
The interlaboratory comparison is open to laboratories that carry out relevant testing of dangerous goods packaging, both with and without ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. Accreditation is not a requirement for participation.
Laboratories can choose the parts of the programme that are relevant to their activities.
Participants’ results will be treated confidentially and presented using anonymised participant codes in the shared report.
Invitation planned for January
We are currently working on the selection of test packaging, practical arrangements and a common test protocol. The formal invitation is scheduled to be sent on 8 January 2027.
Expressing interest does not create any obligation to participate. Final participation will be agreed once the programme and practical arrangements are available.
