Battery Project
Household batteries
The EU has adopted a new battery directive which will be implemented in Norwegian legislation next autumn. The directive states that all portable high-energy batteries (household batteries) must be collected after use.
- The directive requires that all high-energy batteries be collected and treated (recycled) regardless of whether they are environmentally harmful or not
- The background for "total collection" was initially the ambition that this would contribute to ensuring that all lead, cadmium and mercury batteries would be properly destroyed/recycled
- The directive must be implemented in all European countries as of September 26, 2008
The implementation creates major challenges related to:
- Logistics, packaging and HSE
This project will continue until autumn 2008. The financing is provided by Batteriretur AS. Marit Lindstad in the Norwegian Association for Hazardous Waste (NFFA) is responsible for project management in connection with battery return 2008. Smurfit Kappa will supply the packaging, which in turn must be approved by Nordisk Emballasje Testing.
