ADR 2025

NET introduces important changes for the transport of dangerous goods. New requirements for the packaging of hazardous waste, co-packaging and international approvals will affect both customers and transporters. NET helps you navigate the new rules!

Important changes in ADR/RID 2025 for our customers

NET hereby informs our customers and their customers of updates to the ADR/RID regulations that will come into force from 1 January 2025. These are important changes that may affect the packaging, transport and classification of dangerous goods.

New guidelines and changes

  • Changes for large lithium batteries: It will be permitted to package an unspecified number of cells of more than 500 grams and batteries of more than 12 kg in the same large packaging (LP 903).
  • New schemes for packaging waste: Clause 4.1.1.21.7 of ADR 2025 provides guidelines for the packaging of hazardous waste, including requirements for classification, packaging and labeling to ensure safe handling and transport. This will be particularly relevant for actors who handle waste containing dangerous goods.
  • Co-packing of dangerous goods: Point 4.1.1.5 now specifies that co-packaging of different types of dangerous goods, or dangerous goods with other goods, is permitted if there is no risk of dangerous reactions. This allows for more flexibility during transport, but requires careful assessment of compatibility and safe stowage.
  • Sodium ion batteries, UN3551: The regulations will include sodium ion batteries, which will essentially be regulated in the same way as lithium batteries.

What does this mean to you?

  • Customers should prepare to comply with the new packaging regulations for waste and large lithium batteries.
  • The flexibility of co-packaging requires attention to compatibility and security requirements.
  • NET recommends reviewing the original English documents for detailed specifications. You can find these on the pages of UNECE.
  • We encourage all customers to keep up to date and contact us for questions or assistance in connection with the implementation of the new regulations.
